Vida e Morte

(West Hollywood, CA) Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is excited to present Vide e Morte, a group show featuring three of street art capital Brazil’s most talented new voices, Alexandre Anjo, Andre Firmiano, and Pankill. Artwork on display will include works on canvas, wood, fabric, and paper. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 20th, 2008, from 8pm – Midnight. All three artists are flying into Los Angeles from São Paulo to create an on-site installation and attend the reception. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Sunday, October 12th, 2008.
In Vida e Morte, Firmiano explores the socio-economic impact of globalization and urbanization in São Paulo. With clean geometric lines and a monochromatic palette, he delineates the chaos, frustration, and despair inherent in the city’s inhabitants.

Pankill’s focus is the duality of good and evil that exists in every human being. Working with a powerful combination of black, white, and red, her artwork is spiked with images of knives, anchors, axes, and snakes that belie the pretty painted faces of her 1920s-inspired characters.

Anjo infuses his artwork with vibrant colors that represent the four elements. His flamboyant, sensual portrayals of people, animals, and nature are inspired by the heady atmosphere of São Paulo and his interest in Eastern art and philosophy.

Greenberg/McCain mess

Screengrab of Index Page, Sept 14th. Copyright 2008 Jill Greenberg

So, I read these various articles about the Greenberg/McCain photo session. Who knows what is true, what is rumor, and what is exaggerated. First, here are several background Links, to give you the story:
American Digest, strikes back
Greenberg’s website
Unrelated YouTube video featuring Greenberg

Greenberg has a supporter in the crowd. Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua justifies the Greenberg tactics because editorial rates are low. (Update, Monday the 15th: She now appears to be backpedaling. This will be interesting to watch. And she’s a photographer career consultant? Wow. Why not write to her and express your feelings?)

Naked, Taped Jessica Alba Wants You to Vote

There are stranger ways to encourage people to vote but this one from Declare Yourself featuring an undressed, taped up Jessica Alba -- which is somehow supposed to suggest only you can silence yourself (i.e. not vote) -- is up there on the strange list.
Conservatives are predictably outraged over Jessica Alba's advertising for Declare Yourself, a voter drive aimed at 18-29 year olds. The campaign features the tagline "Only You Can Silence Yourself" and a tearful Alba in bondage photograpy by Mark Liddell. The multimedia end includes videos with Zac Efron (High School Musical), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), and Jazzy Jeff (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air).
